Woodenbridge World War 1 Memorial Park
At the prize-giving ceremony on October 15th at the Irish Architectural Archive it was announced that the Woodenbridge World War 1 Memorial Park was the winner of the Irish Landscaping Institute Award. Those involved in the design and construction of this park thanks everyone who voted and helped them secure this prestigious design award.
“Dedicated to the memory of the fallen Heroes from County Wicklow” – this wonderful park is located on the southern bank of the Aughrim River at Woodenbridge, directly across from Woodenbridge Hotel. The memorial park was constructed by the Woodenbridge Village Development Association with the support of County Wicklow World War 1 Memorial Committee. It was opened on the 18th September 2014.
The memorial was constructed along the river bank in a tranquil setting. It consists of fifteen vertical granite slabs designed in three circles. 1,192 names of people who were natives of Wicklow or lived in Wicklow, who died directly or indirectly as a result of World War 1 are listed on the monument.
Woodenbridge was selected as the site because it was the location where John Redmond MP made his famous speech on 20th September 1914 urging Irish volunteers to join the Great War. John Redmond was an MP from 1881 until his death in 1918. He was leader of the Irish Parliamentary Party from 1900 until 1918.

Congratulations to Donal Power who won top photography award
An Arklow photographer won the “An Taisce – love your coast” Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2015 Award. The award is considered the biggest wildlife photography competition in the country following shortlisting earlier this year. It was his spectacular shot of a seagull plucking a starfish out of the sea that caught the judges’ attention. The originality of an individual image without any enhancement is what appeals to Donal about this competition. To see the winning photograph and more of Donal’s wildlife photography please visit his Facebook page.
