Black Tie Ball

This year marks the 70th Anniversary of Arklow Town Football Club. To celebrate, the club will host a Black-Tie Ball in the Arklow Bay Hotel on Saturday June 23rd. Further details will follow.

Lip Sync Fundraiser

Arklow United will host the towns first Lip Sync Fundraiser on Saturday October 13th in the Arklow Bay Hotel. This marks the clubs 40th Anniversary & will raise funds for local charities and for development of the Arklow United football club.

Participants are now being sought and can register through the Arklow United Lip Sync Facebook page. A selection process will take place at a later date.

Now in its 49th year, Arklow Music Festival will take place in a variety of venues across the town from Saturday March 3rd till Sunday, March 11th.

Entries for the festival are now open and are available online http://arklowmusicfestival.com/. These must be submitted to the festival office no later than Tuesday January 16th.

 Hospice Tree Blessing Bridgewater Shopping Centre

Avondale Voice will be singing carols and hymns at the annual blessing on Saturday 9th December at 2pm. This is a lovely way to remember a loved one at this time of year.

 The sixth annual Carols by Candlelight by Cruinniu will take place on Thursday December 14th at 8pm in St Mary & Peter church, Main St Arklow.

On the night there will also be performances by the Arklow Shipping Silver Band, accompanist John Bonner, Michael Flood and students of Mary Walsh.

Proceeds from this year’s concert will go towards the Martin Family Trust. Admission is €5.

Santa’s Arrival

Festive fun for all the family at Bridgewater Shopping Centre as Santa will be arriving on Sunday the 19th November from 11am – 3pm.

 

Christmas Market

 

The seventh annual Christmas market and craft fair will take place in Arus Lorcain, Castle Park Arklow, on Saturday 18th & Sunday 19th November from 11am – 5pm.

Over 40 stalls will display their unique hand crafted goods and Christmas gifts.

Admission is free, and Santa will arrive to officially launch the fair on Saturday at 12:30pm.

 

Fashion Show Extravaganza

St Michael & Peter Junior School will present “All I Want for Christmas” fashion show extravaganza on Friday November 24th at 8pm, in The Arklow Bay Hotel.

Carysfort Festive Fair

  

Carysfort National School will host their annual Christmas Fair on Saturday December 2nd from 10am – 4pm.

Stalls will display an array of arts, crafts & seasonal giftware. Santa will arrive at his grotto at 12pm. The day promises to have something for all the family!

St Saviours annual Fair

The Church of Ireland Community will hold their annual fair in the Malborough Hall on St Marys Road on Friday December 1st from 6pm.

A number of stalls selling a variety of products, and a raffle will be held on the night with some great prizes to be won.

Any money raised will go towards parish funding.

Bird keepers annual show

 The Arklow & District Bird keeping society will host their annual bird show on Saturday 18th November 4pm – 7pm & Sunday 19th November 9am – 2pm in the Arklow Sports Leisure Centre.

The bird show will run in conjunction with the 41st Irish Fancy Society and the 17th Southern Norwich Society.

Over 1600 birds of different variations will be on display. Admission is €3, and children are free.

 Photography Exhibition

Brian McIIvenny, a Co Wicklow photographer will present his latest exhibition “Monolith” for the month of November at Arklow Library.

“Monolith” is an exhibition of monochrome lith prints spanning 20 years of work in traditional film photography techniques.

This exhibition was officially launched by author & Sunday Independent journalist Declan Lynch.

Arklow Seabreeze Festival

The 2017 Arklow Seabreeze Festival reaches its final weekend, with events taking place from Friday, July 14th right through till  Sunday, July 16th.

This fun free event is the highlight in the town’s social calendar and offers something for young and old.

This weekend will bring live street performances from Bare Bones, Wise Guys, Gravity, Glen Art, Small Town Crisis, The Kilkennys and Ray Dolan. Also upcoming music artist can also enter for a busking competition.

The usual carnival will run each night and there will be array of on street fun and games as well as the fireworks display to bring the festivities to a close on Sunday evening.

Local Artists in Arklow Library

 

New collections of paintings by Arklow’s Ferndale Artist’s Group now on exhibition at Arklow Library.

The exhibition features’ over 34 paintings and will run for the month of July.

The majority of the works has used acrylics while a small number are canvass. All the works are previously unseen.

The local art group of around 20 members stemmed from a class run by Arklow Further Education Centre. After the students finished their course they applied for funding to form a group which developed into Ferndale Artist  Group.

They have also exhibited there work at The Sunbeam House Arklow.

The Weekly Arklow Farmers Market resumes in the Pigeon Racing Hall, Castlepark, Arklow on Saturday, July 22nd from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m.

Cathaoirleach for Arklow

Tommy-AnnelseyChamber Member, Cllr Tommy Annesley, has been elected as the new Cathaoirleach of Arklow Municipal District Council, taking over from outgoing Cathaoirleach Cllr Pat Kennedy

Clir. Annesley outlined what he would like to see happen in the town over the next year.

As Cathaoirleach he would like to finish projects that have been ongoing for a while, such as the rock armour on the South Beach and push for the groynes out into the sea to form a natural beach.  He intends pushing for funding from the Department.  An improvement for the business community is also on his agenda.  He hopes the valuation officer  to meet with the Chamber of Commerce and the public to explain how they reach a rateable valuation for properties.

The Arklow District Chamber of Commerce congratulate Councillor Annesley and wish him every success during his tenure.

The Arklow Pottery and Art Festival

 

gold coffe setThe Arklow Pottery and Art Festival, which is a two day event to celebrate the towns rich heritage, will take place on Saturday and Sunday, 24th and 25th of June. This two day event will include a number of live demonstrations and exhibitions of Arklow Pottery production process and includes the pottery designer John Ffrench.

The Festival will be officially Arklow-Pottery-Logoopened on Saturday at 11 am and the exhibition of Arklow Pottery will be open to the public at that time. From 11.30 am Thomas Dunne, Chantal Fortune and Peter Kinsella will be on hand to date and value pieces of Arklow Pottery.  On Sunday from 11 am to 2pm there will be ceramic workshops and an open sale from 11 am to 4.30 pm.

Funding for Arklow Harbour

 

Under the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund (EMF) Operational Program Wicklow County Council have been successful in obtaining funding for three projects. The funding will support storage facilities for fishermen at Arklow Harbour; fisherman hoist upgrade and associated training and restoration of the lightship “ SKUA” lantern. A total investment of €253,750 will be provided for these projects including €76,125 from Wicklow County Council. The remaining €177,625 co-funded by the EU and the Exchequer.

RNLI Mayday 2017

RNLI Mayday 2017 1This May, the RNLI are asking for help kit out their courageous volunteer lifeboat crew. Sign up for a fundraising pack and help provide them with the equipment they need to save lives at sea.  They depend on their kit to help them save lives – and to bring them home safely.  Their target for 2017 is €835,650 and any money raised over and above this amount will go towards funding the RNLI lifesaving work around Ireland and the U.K.  Click on the boot to get your fundraising pack.

Arklow Seabreeze Festival

 

Seabreeze LetterArklow Seabreeze Festival has been running for over 30 years and is currently one of the biggest community based Festivals on the East Coast. In addition to providing free entertainment & fun activities for the people of Arklow, it is a major boost to tourism and retail in our town. The festival is also a platform for local talent and brings up to 20,000 people onto the Main Street of Arklow over its duration in July each year. This year’s Festival runs from Sun 2nd July – Sun 16th July.

They totally rely totally on the generosity of the local community to run the festival which costs in the region of €25K annually, therefore they are looking for 2017. CHRISTMAS FESTIVAL PLANS  

Big plans are under way for Christmas in Arklow and the local Christmas Festival Committee has been hard at work to make the magic happen.  The 2016 festival will be bigger and better with new Christmas lights due to be erected on the Bridge and St Marys Park.  Events will run each weekend between November 26 and December 17.  Anyone who wishes to participate and support the festival can contact Linda Mc Donald at lmcdonal@wicklowcoco.ie.  Below is letter from the Festival Committee on events and the introduction of the Golden Ticket draw.

Arklow “Making A Difference” Video Well Received

The recently launched “Making A Difference” video which showcases Arklow’s business and tourism potential was very well received by the public.  The producers were delighted to learn that it has in excess of 10,000 views in the first week.  The 4 and a half minute long video was produced with funding from Arklow Municipal District Economic Development Funding and the County Wicklow Economic Think Tank.

Pat Kennedy, Cathaoirleach of Arklow Municipal District said the video “showcases the very best that Arklow Municipal District has to offer, our infrastructure, our amenities and our people.  It shows that we are open for business.  We have all the necessary infrastructures needed to nurture economic development and incentivise job creation.  Our location is a commodity that many other districts and counties would love to possess.”

TIDY DOWNS START WORK ON NEW GARDEN

Arklow Tidy Towns has launched a new initiative to brighten up an unused corner of the town.  A new urban garden is under way at Castle park between Arus Lorcain and the Arklow Municipal District building and follows a successful report in this year’s Tidy Towns competition.  Anyone who wishes to volunteer is asked to contact Arklow Tidy Towns. STRICTLY COME DANCING FOR WICKLOW HOSPICE

The Wicklow Hospice is hosting a three-night Stictly in the Arklow Bay.  The first night is the 5th of November, the second night is the 26th of November with the Grand final on 3rd of December.  Tickets cost €10 for each night and are available in the Arklow Bay, from any of the dancers, from the Wicklow Hospice Arklow Office 0402 91310 and from Avondale Sports Shop, Main Street, Rathdrum.
