ARKLOW HARBOUR – NORTH QUAY RIVER WALL – REMEDIAL WORKS
Why is there a need to undertaken remedial works to the North Quay River wall?
The North Quay river wall is an old stone wall. There have been a number of improvement works undertaken on various section of the wall over the years. However, there is a 200 m section of the wall where the mortar bedding has been washed out.
This has resulted in small gaps in the wall between the individual stone blocks through which the retained material is being washed out. This has resulted in subsidence behind the wall as shown below.
How are Wicklow County Council planning going to remediate this problem?
A cofounded project between Wicklow County Council (WCC) and the Department of Agriculture, Food and Marine (DAFM) to undertake the following remedial works to repair the aforementioned issues:
- Removal of vegetation from the wall – the root systems of the various different plants are enlarging the gaps in the wall and will exasperate the problem over time;
- Application of a mortar layer to the North Quay river wall to seal the gaps in the wall;
- Injection of grout behind the wall to fill any voids that may have arisen as a result of material washout and to strengthen the North Quay river wall; and
- Backfilling of surface voids with aggregate material.
The work site stretches 200 m from the front of the Bridgewater shopping centre on the North Quay to the east to Arklow Shipping Limited. The works are scheduled to be undertaken in 8 weeks with the Contractor mobilising to the site on the 18th of August. Where possible works will be undertaken from a Pontoon on the river in order to minimise traffic disruption; however, some of the works will need to be undertaken under traffic management on North Quay. A lane closure and stop/go system will operate for up to 4 weeks of this project commencing on Monday the 29th of August.
