Gaines Europe Ltd announces further development!

GainesGaines Europe has a history that can be traced as far back as 1928 when the then founder of Gaines Pet Food Company, Clarence Gaines, declared and introduced to market the concept of “100 percent complete and balanced nutrition” in his dog food.

Since then there has been a number of significant turning points, the first of which, in 1943, saw General Foods purchase the successful pet food business that Clarence Gaines had developed. The Gaines name and proud tradition of manufacturing quality products extended to Europe when, in 1995, Gaines Europe Limited was established.  Gaines Europe was acquired by Rondo Food in 2011, which is one of the leading private label pet snacks and treat manufacturers in Europe.   In 2013, Gaines’ manufacturing facility was relocated to a new site in Arklow where they have just announced further development in Arklow thanks to the hard work of factory staff and the ambition of their effective management team who have made enormous improvements to the company’s growth and development establishing a strong presence in Europe, North America and Australia.

Well done to all those involved including Enterprise Ireland and the local authorities in Arklow, good news all round!

The Met Live in HD: Turandot

turandotComing to Arklow Omniplex on Sat 30th January @ 6.00pm. Tickets available now. Puccini’s final opera is an epic fairy tale set in a China of legend, loosely based on a play by 18th-century Italian dramatist Carlo Gozzi. Featuring a most unusual score with an astounding and innovative use of chorus and orchestra, it is still recognizably Puccini, bursting with instantly appealing melody. The unenviable task of completing the opera’s final scene upon Puccini’s sudden death was left to the composer Franco Alfano. Conductor Arturo Toscanini oversaw Alfano’s contribution and led the world premiere. Nina Stemme takes on the title role of the proud princess of ancient China, whose riddles doom every suitor who seeks her hand, opposite Marco Berti as Calàf, the brave prince who sings “Nessun dorma” and wins her love. Anita Hartig and Leah Crocetto share the role of Liù, the faithful slave girl. Franco Zeffirelli’s golden production is conducted by Paolo Carignani.

Creating awareness of regional supports vital- Doyle

Regional investment strategy presents real opportunity for Arklow

Fine Gael TD for Wicklow/East Carlow Andrew Doyle has said that a focus on increasing investment in regional locations presents a real opportunity for Arklow and its environs to avail of new investment and employment supports aimed at productive projects in Ireland’s least economically developed areas.

“A target has been set and represents a key element of the IDA Ireland strategy over the next 5 years to increase investments in all regions outside of Dublin by 30-40% which is ambitious and extremely challenging and a range of measures are being implemented towards achieving this goal.”

“The IDA work to attract foreign direct investment to Ireland and are a key influencer in the development of the Irish economy and its reputation abroad. They presented today to the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs Enterprise and Innovation on the findings of their 2014 Annual Report and also about their current activity.”

“At a specially convened meeting on the subject last week in the Woodenbridge Hotel hosted by Arklow Chamber of Commerce on the Regional Aid map was an excellent showcase event for businesses and investors to find out more about the opportunities available for areas included in Regional Aid in South Wicklow.”

“As a development agency Enterprise Ireland are ranked Number 3 globally for seed investment with 180,072 employed in Enterprise Ireland assisted companies at the end of 2014. It is estimated that 300,000 direct and indirect jobs in the Irish economy equating to 16% of workforce.”

“EU Regional aid guidelines adopted in 2014 allow each Member State to provide enhanced rates of State Aid to certain areas and in Ireland, this is implemented by Enterprise Ireland and the IDA.  Regional aid is provided under schemes for tourism grants, marine tourism urban and rural renewal and other tax-based development schemes.”

“With 15,012 new jobs created by IDA client companies, 2014 was a year in which we have seen recovery in the domestic economy. I urge all stakeholders, interest groups and the business community in south Wicklow to take learn more about what supports may be available to them through our development agencies.”

“It is vital to help facilitate the awareness of the supports on offer and central to our Action Plan for Jobs is supporting jobs growth here in Wicklow. I am very happy to work with all local interest groups that want to avail of these supports.”

“Lastly I would like to commend Dr Michael Brougham, Enterprise Ireland, Sheelagh Daly Head of Local Enterprise Office Wicklow and Connor Simpson IDA for their combined expertise”.

Update on the Arklow Christmas Market taking place on Sunday 13th December 12-6 pm

treeDue to the bad weather forecast for the weekend, Arklow Christmas Festival Committee has taken the decision to move the Arklow Christmas Market to an indoor location. They are delighted to have the facilities of Aras Lorcain, Castlepark and are grateful to Fr. Martin and John Carley for the use of this wonderful facility.

Aras Lorcain will be bursting at the seams with wonderful small craft and food businesses with home baking, festive favourites, crafts, cards, jewellery, and a host of Christmas novelties. Most of these will make ideal gifts for family and friends with something to suit all pockets.

Inbhear Mor Performance Ensemble will play outside and Carol singers will entertain inside making this a wonderful and magical day for everyone.

Let us all make this as amazing as possible.  There will be barriers in place to ensure safety of the public and these will go across the road in front of the new Arklow Municipal District Offices, the committee asks all stall holders to have their products etc. onsite anytime from 11am (when Aras Lorcain will be open) and to be set up and ready to roll by 12pm.

Also shoppers will have the added bonus of street entertainment from the top of the town right down to the bottom and includes the Bridgewater Shopping Centre, so the whole town will be working together to make sure everyone gets that something special and keep business in the town of Arklow. Please support their endeavours.

Irish Water identifies preferred site for €30m Arklow Wastewater Treatment Plant

On 9th December 2015 Irish Water announced that it has recommended the Old Wallboard Factory, North Quay, Ferrybank as the preferred site for the new Wastewater Treatment Plant in Arklow. This location has been recommended by Irish Water based on the public consultation processes and consultation with An Bord Pleanála, Wicklow County Council and the Environmental Protection Agency.

The proposed project, which is estimated to cost in the region of €30 million will include:

  • A new Wastewater Treatment Plant and pumping stations to treat wastewater for a population equivalent of 36,000.
  • A pipeline to bring untreated wastewater to the Wastewater Treatment Plant and to bring treated wastewater from the plant to the outfall.
  • An outfall pipe to safely discharge the treated wastewater to the Irish Sea or the Avoca River.

Irish Water will provide a quarterly update on the Arklow project during the period of the Environmental Impact Assessment on the project webpage in addition to updates to local media. Irish Water will continue to liaise and consult with all relevant project shareholders throughout this period.

Commenting on the announcement of the preferred site, Jerry Grant, Head of Asset Management at Irish Water said, ‘The selection of the preferred site for the Arklow Wastewater Treatment Plant at the Old Wallboard Factory Site, North Quay, Ferrybank marks a key land mark in the delivery of a Wastewater Treatment Plant for Arklow. Irish Water is committed to ending the discharge of untreated wastewater in Arklow, along with the other 44 locations identified in the recent EPA Urban Wastewater Treatment Report. Pipe Band

As usual transport for Santa on the day will be provided by Brendan Brady. During the evening members of the band will perform in all of the local pubs and make their collection as they proceed.

This is the only public collection that the band makes during the year and is a vital fundraiser for keeping the band going throughout the following year. The people of Arklow and surrounding areas have always been very generous towards this collection for the band and band members would like to extend their sincere thanks to all for their continued support.

Cruinniú – Carols by Candlelight

This year Cruinniú is hosting their concert ‘Carols by Candlelight’ in aid of Arklow Community Action Resource Centre. To concentrate on the needs of those people in the community who feel isolated, and vulnerable and in need of a space to go where nobody would judge them, the Centre moved to their centre at Crosscare almost four years ago with no funding and they are still going. Arklow Community Action Resource Centre would like to thank all the generous community and also Emer and all at Cruinniú. They will be there on the evening with bells on, and hope the whole community will support it.

Improvement works to Bridge Street Junction

It is now envisaged that these works will commence on Monday  23rd November with an end date of the 19th January 2016.  For the Christmas period 11th December 2015 to the 4th January 2016 the contractor will need to have all traffic management removed from the site. All the underground work will be carried out before the Christmas period and the overground (footpaths and surfacing) after the Christmas period. This project will consist of night time work only.

The Members did ask about the possibility of either:

  • Instructing the contractor to suspend works on the 4th December 2015  as opposed to the 11th December 2015 for the Christmas period.

or

  • Delaying  the start date of the works  until 4th January 2016 .

However, neither option is possible as there may be entitlement for additional costs to the contractor if we instructed either change.

WCC  appreciate the concerns raised and  have been trying to schedule these works to avoid the summer tourist season, water services works and to avoid disruption to traffic in the daytime  so hopefully the members and the public will be able to bear with us during the construction of this scheme.
