COMMUNITY AWARDS SCHEME 2017

As part of its commitment to supporting local community development, Wicklow County Council operates an annual Community Award Scheme. The fund for 2017 will be available as grant aid to successful community groups and local organisations wishing to undertake community projects in their area. Please note the changes to the categories of funding available:

COMMUNITY GRANTS (Maximum grant €2,000).

For small projects and group running costs.

COMMUNITY PRIDE (Maximum Grant €10,000).

Groups or projects that make a significant impact and difference to the lives of the people in their communities under the following headings:

Community Enterprise

New Chamber President

At the AGM of the Arklow & District Chamber of Commerce on 7^th December Donal Murray was elected as the new Chamber President. In his acceptance speech Mr. Murray thanked the outgoing President, Ann McGovern, for the work she had done during her term of office and outlined his plans for his Chamber Presidency. The success of the Chamber in Arklow depends on having a strong diverse member base. Mr. Murray plans to focus on meeting the business community with the objective of increasing membership in 2017.

Arklow Christmas Festival

The Festival continues this weekend with the Christmas Market and Craft Fair in the Main Street on Sunday. Stalls cost €20 but there are a limited number of free stalls available for recognised charities and transition year mini companies.

Achievements of John Tyrrell & Sons Boatyard Recognised

On Friday last, 2^nd December, an information board was officially unveiled on South Quay opposite Anchor Mews which is built on the site of John Tyrrell & Sons Boatyard. The board which is the result of work by Arklow Tidy Towns and Arklow Maritime Museum was unveiled by the founder’s great grandson, Jimmy Tyrrell and Billy Murray. The unveiling was attended by members of the Tyrrell family and employees of the yard. Jimmy is a current member and former president of the Arklow Chamber.

The yard was opened in 1864 and was internationally recognised for building innovative vessels such as the Ovoca, the first motorised fishing boat in Ireland and the hybrid schooners JT&S and the Invermore. Two of their more well-known achievements were the building of the Gypsy Moth III which won the first trans-Atlantic single-handed boat race and the Asgard II the magnificent national sail training vessel which was lost a few years ago and is sadly missed.

190 Years of Arklow Lifeboat

S.S. Mary & Peter’s Church recently welcomed all those involved with the RNLI in Arklow and the wider community to celebrate 190 years of the RNLI in Arklow. Parish priest, Fr. Martin Cosgrave was the chief celebrant and Michael Fitzgerald of Arklow RNLI gave the main address. All the volunteers currently serving were present. The congregation reflected on the Arklow lifeboat history and the crews who have carried out countless rescues over the 190 years.

GOOD NEWS FOR ARKLOW

Fine Gaels Andrew Doyle, has welcomed confirmation of €150,556 in funding for Wicklow under the 2016 REDZ

(Rural Economic Development Zones).

Arklow has received €150,556 to develop a Heritage and Visitor activity centre based on the world renowned Arklow Pottery. The funding is being made available by the Minister for Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs, Heather Humphreys TD. The REDZ scheme aims to stimulate economic development in rural towns and their hinterlands.

Ann McGovern President Arklow Chamber expressed her thanks to Deirdre Whitfield and Michael Nicholson and Linda McDonald of Wicklow Co Council as well as Irene Sweeney for their support for this initiative to bring increased tourism and visitors back to Arklow’s main street. Developing a cultural quarter around pottery, craft and food is central to the regeneration of such a beautiful historic town.

“This is the latest in a series of funding schemes which have been announced by the Government which aims to boost economic activity and improve living standards here in Wicklow and across rural Ireland.

“Under the 2016 REDZ scheme, just over €5.3 million is being approved to 41 projects nationwide, with €1.9 million going to projects in the North and Western Region, €1.3 million for projects in the Southern Region and €2.1 million for projects in the Eastern and Midlands Region.

“The REDZ scheme aims to improve links between rural towns and their hinterlands to stimulate activity at a local level. This initiative encourages Local Authorities to work with local communities, business interests and other State bodies, to identify areas of greatest economic need which can make better use of their local assets to generate economic activity.

“The REDZ programme is one of a number of schemes which will help to support regeneration in rural towns and villages. Funding has previously been provided to towns and villages across <county> under the Town and Village Renewal Scheme. Both schemes will work in a complementary way to ensure that all rural areas have strong economic and social centres, which support a higher quality of life for both town dwellers and those who live in the rural hinterlands.

“Fine Gael in Government is committed to ensuring that people living and working in rural Ireland feel the benefits as the economy continues to recover. I would like to commend Minister Humphreys and her colleague Minister of State for Regional Development, Michael Ring TD, for the range of initiatives they have announced to date aimed at supporting rural communities.

“Minister Humphreys will be publishing the first ever Action Plan for Rural Development in the coming weeks, which will be a cross government approach to supporting rural communities and stimulating regional development.”

Arklow Christmas Festival

The first day of the Arklow Christmas Festival was a great success. There was a wonderful atmosphere with something for everyone to enjoy including a recital by the Inver Ladies Choir, Punch & Judy Show, the switching on of the Christmas Lights and finished with spectacular fireworks display. The committee thanks those who came along to support the event and those who helped in any way.

Lions Christmas Food Appeal

The annual Lions Club food appeal got underway last weekend in Tescos. Watch out for them in SuperValu from 8^th to 10^th December and in Dunnes on 16^th/17^th December.

The annual St. Stephen’s Day charity swim will be held at South Beach or the Cove depending on the weather conditions starting at 12pm and sponsor cards are available from any Lions Club member. Visit Arklow Lions Club Facebook page for more information.

Reindeer Run for Arklow RNLI

Arklow RNLI will be one of the lifeboat stations to benefit from a festive reindeer run which will take place in Dublin’s Marley Park on Sunday, 4^th December. This event will raise much needed funds for the lifeboat crews in Arklow, Dun Laoghaire, Skerries and Howth.

Arklow Geraldines Ballymoney Club

Arklow Municipal District recently honoured the intermediate and minor teams from Arklow Geraldines Ballymoney Club who won their county championships this year. Over 60 representatives from the AGB Club received a civic reception for their achievements and both teams were presented with an engraved plaque to commemorate the occasion. Cathaoirleach of Arklow Municipal District, Pat Kennedy, and Chairman of Wicklow County Council, Pat Fitzgerald, congratulated both teams and their backroom staff. Jimmy Dunne who is Club Secretary of AGB Club said these victories were not just sporting achievement but have wide reaching benefits for business in Arklow and raised the morale of the town.

Arus Lorcain Christmas Market & Craft Fair

The sixth annual Christmas Market & Craft Fair will take place in Arus Lorcain from 10am to 5pm on Saturday/Sunday 19^th/20^th November. The fair will have more than 40 stalls selling unit hand-crafted gifts and Christmas novelties. Santa will be there at 12.30pm to officially open the fair which is a wonderful family event.

Arklow Christmas Festival

The Festival Committee has been working together since May to make the 2016 Festival bigger and better. They have something planned for every weekend until 17^th December. Christmas lights will be switched on 26^th November followed by a mini funfair in the carpark and a fireworks display. Saturday 3^rd December sees the arrival of Santa and a performance by the Arklow Pipe Band. The Christmas Craft Fair and Food Market will be held on 17^th December.

Arklow Vikings Special Olympics

Arklow Vikings Special Olympics are looking for an enthusiastic person to coach the men’s basketball team this season. Training is on Friday evenings from 7.30pm to 8.30pm in the Coral Leisure centre. Anyone interested can contact the club by writing via their Facebook page or by texting or phoning 086-2175501.

Members of the club’s swimming team recently won a total of 16 medals at the gala hosted by Gorey Special Olympics Club. Congratulations to Cormac and Darragh Sheridan, Thomas Duffy, Dan Mulhall, Cathy Macken, Adam and Thomas who are trained by Gemma Bracken.

Santa’s Arrival at Bridgewater

We are excited to announce that Santa will be arriving at the centre on Sunday 20th November at 12 noon! Come along to see Santa arrive in style on the RNLI boat and then into the centre to meet and greet all the children. Visiting Santa is FREE and if you enter our Facebook competition you could be the first person to meet Santa! There will be lots of fun on the mall. Don’t miss out – make sure you bring all the family.

The Bridgewater Shopping Centre special customer evening is back! It’s an evening especially for customers, with carol singing, mince pies, hot chocolate, lots of fantastic DISCOUNTS on the night and spot PRIZES. Pop along on Thursday 24th November between 6-9pm.

Best Christmas Window Display Competition

This competition is open to all businesses in the town from Templerainey to the Wexford Road, so whether you are a shop, hotel, hairdressers, restaurant, office or a café, if you decorate your window for Christmas you are in the competition and have an opportunity to win 1^st, 2^nd or 3^rd place.

The windows will be independently judged and the winners announced on Saturday 17^th December 2016.

Dressing windows for Christmas really helps to create a wonderful atmosphere in the town.

Accessing Finance for Your Small/Medium Business

The Local Enterprise Office Wicklow (LEO Wicklow) are running an ‘Accessing Finance for Your Small/Medium Business’ half-day Workshop on Tuesday 29th November. If you haven’t yet attended one of these Workshops you are strongly encouraged to do so. The cost is only €10 (includes tea/coffee & pastry). The Workshop runs from 9.30am – 1.30pm in the beautiful Wicklow County Campus, Rathnew, Co Wicklow.

Arklow Christmas Festival

The Festival Committee has been working together since May to make the 2016 Festival bigger and better. New Christmas lighting for the Bridge and St. Mary’s Park will be erected this year. There will be free parking in the town from 2^nd December up to and including 2^nd January 2017. The aim is to increase footfall, create a Christmas atmosphere and give the retailers from the Wexford Road to Lower Main Street, Ferrybank and Bridgewater an additional boost during the pre-Christmas period.

Events will run each weekend between 26^th November and the 17^th December and will include switching on of the Christmas tree lights, fireworks display, Punch & Judy Show, arrival of Santa, Pipe Bank recital a live crib, Christmas jumper competition, best window display, Christmas craft fair & artisan food market, children’s art competition and much more.

Launch of the Arklow Lifeboat 2017 Calendar

The official launch of the 2017 Arklow Lifeboat calendar took place at The Old Ship on Friday 4^th November. This year Arklow Lifeboat team up with members of the Tommy Byrne Photographic Society, who have produced stunning pictures of the river, beach and harbour areas. The calendar includes information on highlights and fundraising events during 2017 – starting with “Hurry to the Curry” on Friday 27^th January. Santa Coming to Bridgewater

Arklow’s RNLI crew are making sure Santa arrives safely at Bridgewater on Sunday 20^th November. Santa will be there to meet and greet children at noon and the centre is running a facebook competition to select the child who will be first to meet the man in red.

Launch of the Arklow Lifeboat 2017 Calendar

The official launch of the 2017 Arklow Lifeboat calendar will take place at the RNLI table quiz in The Old Ship on tonight, 4th November 2016. The calendar, which features original photographs taken by members of the Tommy Byrne Photographic Society, will be on sale in the Lifeboat Shop and local shops for €5.

M11 Butterfly Sculpture

In 2016 Mike Johnson was commissioned by Wicklow County Council to create a work to be sited along the new M11 motorway. Mr Johnson wanted a work that was instantly recognisable, considering that the audience would be travelling past the sculpture at speed. He wanted a work that extended along the verge to prolong the view of it. He chose butterflies because they offered the greatest opportunity to allow as many individuals as possible to make a contribution towards the design of the creature’s wings, their connection to the natural world and how that is open to interpretation and appreciation was another advantage.

School children from Co. Wicklow worked with Mike Johnson in creating the butterfly sculpture which can be seen on M11 near Wicklow town. Two schools in Arklow were involved in this project – St. Joseph’s National School and Carysfort National School – and were recently presented with a model of the butterflies which they specifically did and also received a book made by Mike to document the process of making the sculprute. A group of eight to ten children work on the project and Mr. Johnson spent about half a day with each group. The pictures shown above is the work done by the children of Carysfort Nation School on the project.

Good News for Wicklow Partnership Group

There was great excitement in the Wicklow Partnership offices in Avoca River House this week when employees discovered they won a substantial amount in the Euromillions draw. The 24 member syndicate collected the cheque for €156,002 during the week and will each get €6,500. A spokesperson for the group said “It means a happy Christmas for us all”.

CHRISTMAS FESTIVAL PLANS

Big plans are under way for Christmas in Arklow and the local Christmas Festival Committee has been hard at work to make the magic happen. The 2016 festival will be bigger and better with new Christmas lights due to be erected on the Bridge and St Marys Park. Events will run each weekend between November 26 and December 17. Arklow “Making A Difference” Video Well Received

The recently launched “Making A Difference” video which showcases Arklow’s business and tourism potential was very well received by the public. The producers were delighted to learn that it has in excess of 10,000 views in the first week. The 4 and a half minute long video was produced with funding from Arklow Municipal District Economic Development Funding and the County Wicklow Economic Think Tank.

Pat Kennedy, Cathaoirleach of Arklow Municipal District said the video “showcases the very best that Arklow Municipal District has to offer, our infrastructure, our amenities and our people. It shows that we are open for business. We have all the necessary infrastructures needed to nurture economic development and incentivise job creation. Our location is a commodity that many other districts and counties would love to possess.”

TIDY DOWNS START WORK ON NEW GARDEN

Arklow Tidy Towns has launched a new initiative to brighten up an unused corner of the town. A new urban garden is under way at Castle park between Arus Lorcain and the Arklow Municipal District building and follows a successful report in this year’s Tidy Towns competition. Anyone who wishes to volunteer is asked to contact Arklow Tidy Towns. (0402) 24432.

STRICTLY COME DANCING FOR WICKLOW HOSPICE

The Wicklow Hospice is hosting a three-night Stictly in the Arklow Bay. The first night is the 5^th of November, the second night is the 26^th of November with the Grand final on 3^rd of December. Tickets cost €10 for each night and are available in the Arklow Bay, from any of the dancers, from the Wicklow Hospice Arklow Office 0402 91310 and from Avondale Sports Shop, Main Street, Rathdrum.

GET CRAFTY AT THE LIBRARY

Arklow Library is excited to announce the upcoming mid-term arts and crafts sessions on Thursday November 3^rd. Children aged 6-10 are invited to come along and put their creative caps on to produce crafty masterpieces at the Arklow Library building on main street. Christmas Parking Arrangements for Arklow Town 2016

Free parking in Council owned car parks from Friday 2^nd December 2016 up to Monday 2^nd January 2017 inclusive.

Free parking on the street will be restricted to two hours from Friday 2nd December 2016 up to Monday 2^nd January 2017 inclusive.

The Municipal District requests business owners and their staff to avail of parking in the car parks rather than parking on the street during this period.

The traffic wardens will be monitoring the traffic as normal and enforcing all other aspects of the parking bye laws in relation to illegal parking.

Civic Reception for Taekwon-Do Double Medal Winner

Congratulations to local teenager, Oisin Byrne, on his recent success in the International Taekwon-Do World Championships which were held in the Summer. Oisin won Gold in Welter Weight Sparring and Silver in Junior Male Patterns. He was given a Civic Reception in the Arklow Municipal Offices to recognise and celebrate his achievements.

Fishery Talk for Womens Circle

Arklow Community Women’s Circle will be hosting a historical talk by Jim Rees on Monday October 24th Local historian Jim will speak at the groups weekly meeting which runs between 7-9 p.m. at the Bridge Christian Community premises on the Wexford Road, Arklow. THE ELDERS TO BRING LATEST TOUR TO ARKLOW

World renowned musicians The Elders are about to make their 14^th annual trip home to Ireland from their base in the USA. On their Irish tour they will play in the Arklow Bay Hotel on Monday October 24^th at 9pm. With special guests ‘The Moxie Strings’ where audiences are in for a real musical treat. LOUISE IS APPOINTED PRINCIPAL OF GLENART

Kildare and Wicklow Education and Training Board have appointed Louise Kearns as Principal of Glenart College. She is joined by Brid Keely as Deputy Principal. Both Louise and Brid are really looking forward to meeting prospective students and parents at the schools open evening on Wednesday October 26^th.

Arklow Cancer Support are hosting our Annual Pink Party and Awareness Day on Friday October 21 from 11am to 1pm. They are inviting all who have experienced Breast Cancer to come along to 8 St Marys Road with their families and friends. The purpose of this day is to raise awareness of Breast Cancer and fundraising will not take place at any of these events. All are welcome.

ARKLOW THIS WEEK

NEW VIDEO TO PROMOTE ARKLOW

Arklows attractiveness as a centre for business and tourism is highlighted in a new video launched last week by Wicklow County Council. The video covers the Arklow Municipal District and features contributions from local representatives, business figures and others as well as aerial shots of the locality. The purpose of the “Arklow Municipal District – Making a Difference” project is to highlight the District as a business location and a tourist destination.

ARKLOW CHAMBER RAISES €1,270 FOR LOCAL GROUPS

At the Chamber Ball on 16^th September €1,270 was raised in the charity raffle. Arklow Mental Health Group and Arklow Music & Arts will each receive a cheque for €635. Pictured is Chamber President, Ann McGovern, presenting a cheque to Barbara Duffy, HSE Senior Clinical Psychologist.

The 7th annual Arklow Youth Mental Health Week was officially opened on Monday 10th October and the theme this year is “The Importance of Good Relationships for Positive Mental Health”. Arklow Music & Arts group are fundraising to establish a Music & Arts Venue for Arklow.

AGB SCOOP INTERMEDIATE FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP

It was down to the wire and Arklow Geraldines Ballymoney scooped the football win of their dreams in the closing seconds of their Intermediate Football Championships final against Ballinacor. The final minutes of Sundays match had supporters on the edge of their seats as Ballinacor went two points up after a penalty. Cal Kelly was the hero of the day when during the final play he lashed the ball into the back of the net sparking scenes of pandemonium and joy on the Arklow side.

GREENSHINE TO PERFORM IN ARKLOW

The popular Cork folk group Greenshine will play a concert at the Breffini on Main Street in Arklow on Wednesday 19^th October at 8. 30pm. They have been praised widely by the likes of Christy Moore and Sharon Shannon. Playing support on the night will be local singer-song writer Gabby Brady who also has a new album on release.
