Funding of €56 thousand announced for Rural Development in Arklow & District

REDZWell done to the Arklow REDZ group (ARG) for achieving funding of €56,000 for rural economic development in Arklow as part of the REDZ (Rural Economic Development Zone). This is great news and will help bring a new economic focus to support the local communities around Arklow.

The project aims to create jobs and develop economic and social renewal initiatives for Arklow Town and district. The application will support regeneration in Arklow – following the M11 Arklow/Rathnew upgrade works, and Arklow’s inclusion in the Regional Aid Map. “It’s great to work with such committed people – thanks to all who helped to get this application through – email chamber@arklow.ie if you want to get involved” said Arklow & District Chamber President, Ann McGovern.

Arklow Town will be the hub of the REDZ zone and will built a new relationship between Arklow town and its hinterland, including Aughrim, Rathdrum and Avoca. The project will be implemented by Arklow REDZ Group (ARG) and a key action will be the employment of a Development Manager who will be employed by Arklow Chamber of Commerce to deliver on the proposed action plan.

It is hoped that if this pilot scheme is a success, a call for proposals for a more extensive REDZ initiative under the LEADER elements of the RDP.  Further briefings are taking place on the 6th October at 8pm in the Grand Hotel, Wicklow and in Germaines in Baltinglass on 8th October at 8pm.

This REDZ funding comes after the recent announcement of the €30 million Village and Town Renewal Scheme, which will run over 6 years and help to support towns and villages across the country.

The Woodenbridge World War 1 Memorial Park is located on the southern bank of the Aughrim river at Woodenbridge, directly across from Woodenbridge Hotel.  The memorial park was constructed by the Woodenbridge Village Development Association with the support of County Wicklow World War 1 Memorial Committee. It was opened on the 18th September 2014.

The memorial was constructed along the river bank in a tranquil setting. It consists of fifteen vertical granite slabs designed in three circles.

1,192 names of people who were natives of Wicklow or lived in Wicklow, who died directly or indirectly as a result of World War 1 are listed on the monument.

WW1-3

Woodenbridge was selected as the site because it was the location where John Redmond MP made his famous speech on 20th September 1914 urging Irish volunteers to join the Great War. John Redmond was an MP from 1881 until his death in 1918. He was leader of the Irish Parliamentary Party from 1900 until 1918.

Arklow Tidy Towns Results 2015

Congratulations to Sandra Hall, Sandra Duffy and the Arklow Tidy Towns committee on achieving 3rd place in the county. This is what Sandra Duffy had to say about this achievement…

Arklow Tidy Towns2“This year we jumped 7 points to achieve a mark of 298…3rd in the county out of 26 entries. Our litter and tidiness mark beat the winner Letterkenny by 3 points. Other categories will have to be worked on. WE were awarded a bronze medal & commended in the adjudicators report. Our thanks to all the residents, volunteers, schools and businesses who came out to clean. The CE Scheme & Gateway Council Scheme are to be credited with the cleanliness acknowledged by the judge. An area that was complimented was the abundance of wildlife features in the town but no identification information boards highlighting these. If anyone like to sponsor information boards on the river walk or the beach or graveyards please let us know. Another category we could increase points in is sustainable waste and resource management. If any of the Chamber Members are recycling waste, or becoming paperless or switching to LED lighting or saving water etc. or doing any environmentally enhancing activity would you contact the Chamber Office so we can include it in next year’s submission. Our sincere thanks to everyone who helped achieve this fantastic result…”

Robert Mullan – a treasure trove of Wicklow images now available

Robert MullanRobert photographed news and sport in south Co Wicklow for both local and national newspapers in the 1980s and 90s. A while back he ‘unearthed’ some of the negatives from that period and has ‘digitalised’ over three hundred from the well over 400,000 images he owns. While there is a ‘Search’ box on the pages, it will not find everyone in every shot. After all this time, he won’t have records of names and other details of a lot of the shots. However, feel free to browse, you never know who or what you might come across! It is over 12 years since Robert decided to leave local photojournalism to explore other areas such as architectural photography. During this time, he has seen huge technological changes. Looking back, ‘turning digital’ brought him great personal satisfaction and helped to win many distinctions through his photography of the built environment, including:

Royal and SunAlliance/Irish Professional Photographers Association “Photographer of the Year 2001”
“Commercial Photographer of The Year 2003”
British Professional Photographers Association
“Overseas Architectural Photographer of the Year 2004”
Winner of the Craftsman Award, Irish Professional Photographers Association
Irish Professional Photographers Association “Best Reportage Wedding Portfolio Winner 2012”

The End of an Era

The Sisters of Mercy have been in the town continuously since 1876 and have taught many generations of Arklow people.  Sr. Sior Cosgrave, who recently retired as Principal of St. Mary’s College, is moving to Dublin which means the relationship between the Sisters of Mercy and Arklow sadly comes to end.  To mark this there is a special mass of thanksgiving in Arklow Parish Church on Saturday September 26th at 6.30pm.

Arklow to host first Coastal Rowing Championships

Arklow Rowing Club2The inaugural Irish Open Coastal Rowing Championship is being held this Sunday 20th Sept along South Beach in Arklow. The event is being hosted by ArklowRowing Club and will involve crews racing in FISA type coastal rowing boats around a 4km course. The Irish Open Coastal Rowing Championships will have crews and rowers from both Ireland and Wales taking part and will start with the Men’s Quads Heats at 10.30am on the Sunday 20th Sept and nine races will be run over the course of the day, concluding in the Men’s Singles Finals which are scheduled for approximately 4.00pm. The race card includes Men’s and Ladies Quads, Doubles and Singles racing over a 4km course along Arklow’s South Beach. While this event represents a wonderful opportunity for the Arklow Rowing Club who are also celebrating their 25th Anniversary, it also demonstrates the overall growth and awareness that rowing has within Ireland. Coastal rowing represents one of the easiest sports to access and participate in as it is only the hardest of weathers that would prevent a coastal rower from getting out on the water. The local Arklow community can testify to that.

All are welcome to attend. If you follow the link to the website or the Facebook page you will find all you need to know about the event, including the layout of the course. In the mean time Sunday’s race times are below:

Public Alert: Boil Water Notice – Aughrim / Annacurragh

Public Alert:

 Boil Water Notice

Aughrim/Annacurragh

Public Water Supply

Irish Water and Wicklow County Council

Date: 15th September 2015

Boil Notice Aughrim Annacurragh Water Supply

boil-water-noticeIrish Water in partnership with Wicklow County Council wishes to advise that the Public Water Supply at Aughrim & Annacurragh has been placed on a Boil Water Notice until further notice.

It is recommended that all users fed from the Aughrim & Annacurragh Public Water Supply boil water before use for human consumption.

For further information please contact Irish Water Customer Services on 1890 278 278.

On the advice of the Health Service Executive and as a precautionary measure pending further investigation, a boil water notice is being issued to all users on the Aughrim & Annacurragh Public Water Supply Scheme. Accordingly, in the interest of public health, it is recommended that all users fed from the Aughrim / Annacurragh Public Water Supply boil water before use.

Water must be boiled for:

  • Drinking
  • Drinks made with water
  • Preparation of salads and similar foods, which are not cooked prior to eating
  • Brushing of teeth
  • Making of ice

  • Water can be used for personal hygiene, bathing and flushing of toilets but not for brushing teeth or gargling.
  • Boil water by bringing to a vigorous, rolling boil and allow cooling. Cover and store in a refrigerator or cold place. Water from the hot tap is not safe to drink.
  • Domestic water filters will not render water safe to drink.
  • Caution should be taken when bathing children to ensure that they do not swallow the bathing water.
  • Discard ice cubes in fridges and freezers and filtered water in fridges. Make ice from cooled boiled water.
  • Use water prepared for drinking when preparing foods that will not be cooked (e.g. washing salads).
  • Prepare infant feeds with tap water that has been brought to the boil once and cooled. Do not use water that has been reboiled several times. If bottled water is used for the preparation of infant feeds it should be boiled once and cooled. If you are using bottled water for preparing baby food, be aware that some natural mineral water may have high sodium content. The legal limit for sodium in drinking water is 200mg per litre. Check the label on the bottled water to make sure the sodium or `Na’ is not greater than 200mg per litre. If it is, then it is advisable to use a different type of bottled water. If no other water is available, then use this water for as short a time as possible. It is important to keep babies hydrated.
  • Anyone suffering from diarrhoea for more than two days should contact their general practitioner. They should continue to drink plenty of boiled or bottled water.

Great care should be taken with boiled water to avoid burns and scalds as accidents can easily happen, especially with children.

How long before the boil water notice can be lifted?

We do not know at present, but Irish Water and Wicklow County Council will continue to liaise with the Health Service Executive with a view to lifting the Boil Water Notice as soon as practicable.

Sound investment in instruments as €210,000 announced for Music Capital Scheme 2015

instrumentsOn 2nd September 2015 Music Network welcomed the announcement by Heather Humphreys TD, Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, confirming capital funds of €210,000 for the Music Capital Scheme 2015.

The Music Capital Scheme, supported by the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht and managed by Music Network, provides funding for the purchase of musical instruments to both non-professional performing groups/ensembles and professional musicians.

Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht Heather Humphreys TD said:

“In Ireland, we are lucky to possess a wealth of musical talent.  For this talent to continue to progress and flourish it is vital that our musicians are supported and provided with the opportunities to improve their performing ability.  Over the past five years, the funding provided by my Department for the Music Capital Scheme has enabled Music Network to provide support for the purchase of musical instruments to a wide range of talented individuals and groups, including choirs, orchestras, youth bands and traditional music groups. I am delighted therefore to announce capital funding of €210,000 for the Music Capital Scheme in 2015.”
