World Suicide Prevention Week 2016 takes place between Monday, September 5th and Sunday, September 11th, with World Suicide Prevention Day on Saturday, 10th September. #WSPD16

Cycle Against Suicide is actively supporting this week through its initiative Light Up Orange. #LightUpOrange

Last year there was a huge response with many of Ireland’s iconic buildings, landmarks, historic castles and homes turning their lights orange to raise awareness of the message “It’s OK not to feel OK; and it’s absolutely OK to ask for help”.

To date they have had a great response, but their goal to Light Up Ireland needs support from Co. Wicklow. Maybe you could light one of your buildings up orange to create awareness of World Suicide Prevention Week, or even just light the building up at 8pm on Saturday, 10th September.

Contact Anne McGowan, Light Up Orange Co-Ordinator, by e-mail anne.mcgowan@cycleagainstsuicide.com or phone 087-2249204 if you can be a part of this years Light Up Orange.

The Arklow Water Supply Scheme – investing in the future

arklow-bridge26 July 2016

Robert Mulhall takes a look at the key issues faced at the outset of the Arklow Water Supply Scheme and gives an overview of the different aspects of work that were required to develop this new public water supply

Eleven years after its initiation and following the investment of over €10.5 million, the Arklow Water Supply Scheme was finally completed in May of this year. This article examines the key issues faced at the outset of the Arklow Water Supply Scheme and gives an overview of the different aspects of work that were required to develop this new public water supply.

In the period 1998-2005, the population of Arklow increased significantly due to the amount of housing development that took place within the town. The old water-supply system had reached maximum capacity. This capacity issue was exacerbated by the fact that the old supply was totally dependent on surface water sources:

  • The Goldmines River, which is located in Woodenbridge (7km northwest of Arklow) and
  • The Impoundment Reservoir located at Ballyduff South (3km west of Arklow).

Arklow Seabreeze Festival

Seabreeze Festival Magic

This year’s Arklow Seabreeze Music and Arts Festival surpassed all expectations bringing out huge crowds for the entire festival creating a magical experience, which ended on Sunday night with a spectacular Fire Works Display on the River Bank Arklow. People were high in their praise for the very small committee of eight people who put on a festival to be proud of, with so many visitors, tourists, families and friends travelling home for the event. Not one bed space was available throughout the entire town of Arklow and surrounding areas, with tourists from USA, Germany, Spain and other towns and villages supporting all of the events and activities in a packed programme.

Under the Chairmanship of  Colm Moules,  he thanked everyone for their help and support for this year’s festival, especially the committee of Tina O Sullivan, Mary Burke, Tommy Annesley, Donal Molloy, Dicey O Reilly, Vinnie Byrne, Jim Hoey and all the volunteers who helped out over the weekend. “A Festival of this magnitude requires a lot of time, planning and execution, which started after last year’s event, and we pulled of a fantastic weekend of Fun, Laughter, Music and Entertainment” Colm said. “With a very small budget, limited resources and support for the local businesses we just about managed to cover the costs of this year’s festival”.  Each year it gets more and more difficult to add something new, raise the bar and give the town something special”.
