Kynoch’s  Explosion remembered

On September 21st, 1917, Arklow was rocked by an explosion at the local Kynoch’s ammunition factory, in which 27 men lost their lives.

This year, the 100th anniversary of the tragic event will be remembered by Arklow Music and Arts Group (AMA) at a special centenary concert. The group plans to turn the clock back to 1917 and the music those men had listened to will be played again  on Thursday, September 21st  and Peters Church, Arklow, at 7.30 p.m. A number of commissioned pieces of poetry, song, music and dance will also be performed on the night.

A wealth of talent from Arklow and surrounding areas, inc. St Marys Orchestra, Karla Tracey and Frances Ryan School of Dance to name but a few all of whom have given their time freely to support AMA in their campaign to provide a theatre and performance space for the Arklow area.

Special thanks on the evening will include Kitty Brennan, Michael Fitzgerald, Pat Power, Jim Rees and MC Jim Furlong.

Tickets are on sale at www.gr8events.ie but can also be purchased at the following outlets: Mc Mullans, Kennys of the harbour, Kavanaghs and Kustom Kids. Tickets are priced at €15.00 each or groups of 10 or more can avail of a special price of €12.00 if booked at the same time.

Anyone interested in advertising in the program should contact a committee member or visit the AMA Facebook page.

Arklow Trade Rising

This is great news for the Community as there are four new businesses placed in Arklow taking over vacant retail units.

Very recently Wok Star Asian street food and The Sewing corner opened their doors on the main street while Prezzomolino Italian restaurant launched beside the bank of Ireland at the other end of the street.

Also the former Extra-Vision store unit on the Wexford road has been transformed into a branch of Life Pharmacy, owned by pharmacist Laura Armstrong and is set to open its doors in the near future.

Following a difficult few years, it appears that entrepreneurs are now willing to put their faith in the town.

We wish them all the success in the future.

Huge Interest in Enterprise Town

The Bank of Ireland Enterprise Town is coming back to Arklow and  is set to be bigger than ever as a new venue at Glenart College has been secured.

The Enterprise Town exhibitors last year made lots of local connections with other organisations and gained significant business as a result. This year they plan to help foster the networking by bringing exhibitors together in advance of the event to facilitate and maximise the potential among local businesses.

Demand to participate in Arklow Town is high and since the launch last Thursday, over 60 local organisations have registered to take part.

This event is free for everyone with lots of entertainment for all ages, spot prizes and special guest.

Schools, Clubs and businesses interested in taking part can register by emailing derek.tobin@boi.com or calling the Bank of Ireland Arklow
