The Arklow Chamber of Commerce President Mr Donal Murray was delighted to welcome over 230 people to the Chamber Ball & Business Awards event in the Arklow Bay Hotel on Friday the 14th September. The event was a huge success and celebrated the accomplishments of many local businesses in Arklow.

Fashion Show

To mark 90 years in business, McMullan’s Arklow is hosting a charity fashion show in aid of Arklow Community Action Resource Centre on Friday 19th October in Árus Lorcáin.  Tickets cost €12 and include a cheese and wine reception.  The show will feature fashion from McMullan’s, John Flood, Fayebella, B Couture Bridal and Ralph O’Connell’s. This promises to be a great night of fun, fashion and food.  All are welcome to attend.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Autumn Art Exhibition

Arklow Visual Arts Gallery is holding its first Autumn Art exhibition.  The exhibition opens on Tuesday evening, September 18th from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. and will run until Friday, September 28th.

Seven local artists are participating in the show featuring paintings in oil, acrylic, watercolour, mixed media and wood creations.  The artists are Mary Mitchell, Helen Hiney, David Owens, Tony Byrne, Michael Sheehan, Masie Dillon and Patrick Power.  Admission is free and all are welcome.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Positive Ageing Week

The official launch of Arklow Positive Ageing Week takes place on Friday 28th September at 2 p.m. at Arklow Library.

Positive Ageing Week is a national celebration of the contribution that older people have made and continue to make in the community.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Arklow centre hosting social media course

Arklow Business Enterprise Centre will host a one-day course on designing a social media campaign for beginners.  Local Enterprise Wicklow is behind the course, which takes place on Wednesday 10th October from 9.30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Participants need to have a personal Facebook and Twitter account set up before attending this course, and to be familiar with both applications.  This training day is about setting up a social media presence for a business, not for personal use.

This one day course is aimed at people, owner managers or key staff, who may not have taken their business online and are interested in exploring the potential of social media as a brand building and marketing mechanism for their business.

On completion of this programme, participants will have the knowledge to decide what social media platforms are suited to their business needs and the skill to take their business onto Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Instagram.  This course will demonstrate the basics of setting up social media accounts for business.

The cost of the course is €60 and the trainer is Michael Keogh of The Entrepreneurs Academy.

Chamber Ball

The Arklow and District Chamber Ball takes place this Friday night, 14th September in the Arklow Bay Hotel.  The evening will start with a drinks reception at 7 p.m. followed by dinner at 8 p.m.  The presentation of awards will take place after dinner.

The awards recognize local people and businesses and their achievements in a number of categories.  Three nominees have been chosen in each category and the overall winner will be revealed on the night after the independent judging panel has completed its deliberations.

Also on the night the 2018 ‘Person of the Year’ award will be presented to well known Arklow athlete and hero Mary Hickey.

Arklow United Football Club launches massive Lip Sync Fundraiser

Arklow United FC, as part of their 40th Anniversary celebrations, has announced details of their largest ever fundraiser, at a launch in the Harbour Bar this week.

Arklow United Lip Sync takes place on Saturday 13th October in the Arklow Bay Hotel and will see up to 12 acts battling it out on stage to take the first ever Lip Sync Legend title.

Proceeds of the event will go towards grounds development at Ferndale Park, and a proportion will be divided between two local charities Arklow Cancer Support and Arklow Community Action Resource Centre.

Art Exhibition at Arklow Library

Arklow Library will host an exhibition entitled Fragments in Landscape by Kilkenny artist Claire Mulcahy, which opens on Thursday 6th September from 7-8 p.m.

Claire has been painting at KCAT Art and Study Centre, Callan, Co Kilkenny since 2010.  ‘Fragments in Landscape’ is a series of abstract paintings inspired initially from collages using silver paper as a way of exploring shape and light in landscape.

The exhibition will be available to view for the month of September at Arklow Library Gallery and admission is free.  Claire will formally open the exhibition on September 6th and refreshments will be served.  All are welcome.

Arklow Chamber of Commerce Award Nominees are revealed

Just weeks remain before this year’s Arklow & District Chamber Ball & Awards Ceremony and the shortlist of nominees has been revealed.

Three nominees have been chosen in each category and the overall winner will be revealed on the night after the independent judging panel has completed its deliberations.

The Ball will take place at the Arklow Bay Hotel on Friday September 14, and both members and non-members are welcome to attend. The evening will commence with a drinks reception at 7.00pm with dinner served at 8.00pm followed by the presentation of the awards.

Sunbeam artists for Arklow exhibition

A group of artists from Sunbeam House Services who work in a variety of art mediums from painting, felting, pyrography, print, upcycling textiles and embroidery are exhibiting in The Arklow Gallery from Tuesday September 4 until Friday September 14.

This group of 28 artists have completed a wide range of work in their chosen medium offering this exhibition something to interest everyone.  Admission is free.

Arklow Halloween Festival

GROTESQUE groups, blood-curdling businesses and shocking schools are all being encouraged to get in on the action as the second annual Arklow Halloween Festival.

Plans are under way for the second helping of the festival and Arklow Municipal District is pulling out all the stops to ensure that a memorable event takes place in the community.  Following the success of the inaugural event, it is hoped to make the Halloween night festivities on Wednesday 31st October, even better by having a larger street parade, staged event and firework display.  Community or sports groups interested in getting involved in the parade or businesses seeking to register their window displays, should email to ArklowMD@wicklowcoco.ie or phone 0402 42700.

New Exhibition at Arklow Library

Arklow Library will present a new exhibition showcasing works by UCD Landscape Architecture Masters Studio.

“Arklow through the eyes of strangers” will run as part of Heritage Week from August 9th till August 31st and will take place in two parts comprising film, photographs and plans.

Part 1 of the event will open on August 9th at 6pm and will see an exhibtion of 30 large format photographs of Arklow and films of the students discoveries.

Part 2 will open on August 16th at 6pm and will be a showcase of drawings, plans, sketches, maps and notebooks prepared by the students in response to the town.

Teenage Book Club in Library

A teenage book club meets at Arklow Library on Tuesday August 21st at 5.30pm. The “Hate u give” by Angie Thomas is up for discussion and the club is aimed at people attending secondary school. The Warg Riders Motorcycle Club will depart on its third Biker Ride Against Suicide at 1pm from the Bridgewater Shopping Centre. Entry is €10 for a bike and rider and €5 for pillion.

Shelton Abbey Gardens

Shelton Abbey Open Centre will open its gardens to the public from 1pm – 4pm on Thursday 19th July. There will be a tour of the gardens, historical talks on the house, face painting and refreshments.

There is no entry fee however any donations will go to the Wicklow Hospice Foundation.

The Arklow Parish Family Fun Day takes place on Sunday, July 1st from 12:30pm in the parish grounds. A BBQ, bouncy castle, face painting and lots of family fun will be on offer. There will also be dancing with Laura Gannon and the art competition awards.

 

Sandcastles Competition

A family sandcastle building competition will take place on Sunday July 15th at South Beach Arklow. Come along and show off your sandcastle talents at the family fun event.

The annual Blessing of the Graves in St Gabriel’s cemetery takes place Friday July 6th at 7pm. This is a highlight in the communitys summer religious diary and may people have been hard at work preparing their family graves for the occasion.

 

 

 

Arklow SeaBreeze Festival

Arklow Seabreeze Festival has been running for over 30 years and is currently one of the biggest community based Festivals on the East Coast. In addition to providing free entertainment & fun activities for the people of Arklow, it is a major boost to tourism and retail in our town. The festival is also a platform for local talent and brings up to 20,000 people onto the Main Street of Arklow over its duration in July each year. This year’s Festival runs from Sun 8th July – Sun 22nd July.

As part of this year’s Seabreeze festival we are announcing a new event “Arklow’s Fittest family”. Similar to the tv programme, families will be pitted against each other in different challenges in an effort to win a 6 month family membership to The Bay Health and Leisure club and €100 in cash. The 1st round eliminator challenge will take place over the festival weekend on Friday 20th of July, with 3 teams going forward to the finals on the Sunday 22nd.

The Bridgewater Seabreeze Festival Princess competition will be held on Sunday 8th July in the Midway Bar, Lounge and Restaurant at 8pm.  Anyone over the age of 18yrs can enter, names to be given to Mary Burke (Secretary) 087 9259504 or Tina O’Sullivan (Chairperson) 087 9093848 or indeed any committee member. Prizes to the value of €1000 will be up for grabs with the Winner and Runner-up receiving prizes.  Mr. Seabreeze will also feature on the selection night of the Princess competition.

In the run up to the main weekend the annual battle for Swinging Pubs Champions for 2018 will take place, this will run from Tuesday 10th right up to Thursday 19th July, where the final night will take place in The Bridge Hotel and the winners will be announced.  Taking part will be: The Olde Ship, Darcy Mc Gees, The Gin Mill, Arklow Bay Hotel, John Joes, Sally O’ Brien’s, Kenny’s of the Gallery, Christies, The Midway Bar, Lounge & Restaurant. Please come out and support this wonderful festival which is free for the entire weekend.

Another popular feature will be the Artisan Food and Crafts which will be held on the Main Street on Sunday 22nd July, the committee are asking trade stands/stall holders to contact them on 087 2886845 to secure your place. A great line up of music is in store with something to suit all tastes.

WOODBRIDGE FASHION SHOW

 

ARKLOW VISUAL ARTS EXHIBITION

The current Nine Fine Artist exhibition at the Arklow Visual Arts Gallery has been extended due to popular demand.  The exhibition of works of nine local artist’s from within the Arklow area launched on May 22, and such as the response locally that it is to continue for another week.

The exhibition represents a move on the gallery’s part, towards encouraging local artist who have not exhibited work for a time to do so.  For more information drop in during opening hours Monday to Thursday 9am to 5pm at 61/63 Main Street, Arklow

Registration can be completed via popupraces.ie or on the day form 8am at no 8 St Marys Road. The cost is 15 per adult and €5 per child. The first 150 people to register will receive a free T-Shirt.

ARKLOW SEABREEZE FESTIVAL

The Arklow Seabreeze Music and Arts Festival takes place this year from Sunday 1st July right up to the main part of the Festival which this year runs from Friday 20th July – Sunday 22nd July. We are currently looking for contestants to take part in the Bridgwater Seabreeze Princess competition which will take place on Sunday 1st July. Prizes valued of up to €1000 from The Bridgewater Shopping Centre this year.

Entries are currently being accepted by the committee and all participants must be over 18 years of age by 1st July to be eligible. The Bridgewater S.C. have once come on board to sponsor this competition and a specially commissioned Tiara hand made by John Swan jewelers will go to this year’s winner.

 Starbucks have teamed up with Eason’s to provide children with a free story time every Saturday at 11am. From now until the end of the year, bring children to the Starbucks kids’ corner for them to enjoy the story of the week!
