Arklow & District Chamber Ball & Business Awards 2017

We are delighted to announce that this year’s Arklow & District Chamber Ball & Business Awards Ceremony will be held on Friday 15th of September in the Arklow Bay Hotel. The guest speaker for this year’s awards is Sean Kelly MEP.

The ball promises to be a wonderful night to celebrate all that is good about business in south County Wicklow.

Both members and non-members are welcome to attend. The evening will commence with a drinks reception at 7.15 pm with Dinner served at 8.15pm followed by the presentation of awards.

The Person of the Year Award – This award will recognize a person who, through their achievements, has made an outstanding contribution to the town or is an Ambassador for Arklow.

Enterprise in Arklow Photography Competition

Photo Competition is now closed.

Many Thanks to all that sent in photos for the Enterprise in Arklow photo competition. We received a huge number of beautiful photos of Arklow.

A selection of photographs will be displayed at the Arklow & District Chamber Ball on 15th September  2017. Entrants of these photos will be informed in advance and winning entries will be announced that evening. Best of Luck to everyone.

 

Arklow Maritime Heritage

As part of the National Heritage week, this Sunday the 20th August (opening time 10am – 7pm)  Arklow Maritime Museum are inviting people to come and learn about the maritime history of Arklow, focusing in particular on its boat building, lifeboat and fishing traditions.

The Maritime Museum is located in the front of the Bridgewater Shopping Centre (next to Eddie Rockets).

This is a free event, and suitable for children.

Classic Car Show

 

 

East Coast Classics will be hosting the popular classic & vintage car show at Arklow Rugby Club on Sunday August 20th from 12 noon until 5pm.

The show will include a fantastic display of vintage and classic cars.  It promises to be fun filled afternoon for all the family, with live music, bouncy castles and refreshments.

Admission is €10 for adults. Children are free.

2017 RNLI Maritime Festival Weekend

The annual Arklow Maritime Festival weekend is bigger and better than ever. The event runs this August Bank Holiday from the 4th to  the 6th and is continuing to grow every year. The festival is an important RNLI fundraiser and assists in the running of this crucial voluntary organisation.

The festival gets underway on Friday 4th August from 7pm where the Maritime Festival Princesses will meet at the Lifeboat station to meet and greet. This will be followed by a parade around the town and back to Arklow Sailing Club to select the Maritime Queen for 2017.

On Saturday & Sunday, there will be fun packed schedule that will include live music, Viking BBQ, bouncy castle, boat trips, along with a vast array of fun activities, attractions, family entertainment & events all down by the quayside.

An assortment of visiting vessels will be in attendance over the weekend, including Mersey Maritime Museums Vintage TugBoat, Irish navel Vessel Le Orla, Informars Fleet of Survey Vessels Viking Longship along with vintage lifeboats.

Many local groups will be participating in the festival, Arklow Majorettes, Arklow Sea Scouts, Arklow Pipe Band, Arklow Rowing Club, Arklow Uklele Players and many more.

Festival Fills Arklow Town

 

Arklow Seabreeze Music and Arts Festival exceeded all expectations bringing huge crowds for the entire festival  creating a magical experience . It drew to a close on Sunday night with a spectacular fireworks display on the Riverbank.

The level of visitors to the town was astonishing as there wasn’t a single room left in hotels and guest houses in the community.

There were many highlights which went down a storm including the Dainty Bakery Baby Show, Trade Winds Burger Contest and the AGB Festival of Football.

There was great praise for the small eight member committee under the chairperson of Colm Moules who pulled together an event to be proud of. The committee would like to thank the people who gave their time and money to help this year’s festival including the press and photographers, East Coast FM for their support, the emergency services, Order of Malta, and The Gardai.

Extend a special word of thanks to the generous sponsors whose support helped to make the 2017 Seabreeze Festival possible.

Local Artists in Arklow Library

 

New collections of paintings by Arklow’s Ferndale Artist’s group now on exhibition at Arklow Library.

The exhibition features’ over 34 paintings and will run for the month of July.

The majority of the works has used acrylics while a small number are canvass. All the works are previously unseen.

The local art group of around 20 members stemmed from a class run by Arklow Further Education Centre. After the students finished their course they applied for funding to form a group which developed into Ferndale Artist  Group.

They have also exhibited there work at The Sunbeam House Arklow.

New Exhibits on show at Maritime Museum

The Arklow Maritime Heritage has the latest and recent acquisition which is a set of signal flags donated by John Mahon of Oaklands, Arklow. John has donated over time several items from schooner, The Denbighshire Lass’. Along with the flags was a fid, a finely tapered wooden spike which was used for slicing ropes.

In recent weeks they have received a telegram sent by Captain Jack Kenny to his wife in 1940 after he had survived a submarine attack on the ship which had been sunk, but thankfuly there were no casualties on that occasion.

Another donation from Patrick O Neill  who is a native from Arklow. A baby’s cradle made from sail canvas. Wooden frame is being made so the cradle can be shown to its best advantage. It will be a star attraction to the museum.

Arklow Maritime Museum  is situated in the Bridgewater Centre and is open seven days a week, 10 a.m. till 5 p.m.

The 2017 Arklow Seabreeze Festival reaches its final weekend, with events taking place from Friday, July 14th right through till  Sunday, July 16th.

This fun free event is the highlight in the town’s social calendar and offers something for young and old.

This weekend will bring live street performances from Bare Bones, Wise Guys, Gravity, Glen Art, Small Town Crisis, The Kilkennys and Ray Dolan. Also upcoming music artist can also enter for a busking competition.

The usual carnival will run each night and there will be array of on street fun and games as well as the fireworks display to bring the festivities to a close on Sunday evening.

Arklow Seabreeze Festival

 

The 2017 Arklow Seabreeze Festival was launch last Thursday in the Bridge Hotel.  The festival starts on Sunday 2nd July with the selection of the “Festival Princess” in The Midway in the Main Street and continues until Sunday 16th July.  See programme below for list of events.

Arklow’s Flower Basket Scheme       

 

Flower BasketThe Flower Basket Scheme which was the initiative of the Arklow Town Team has been a great success with more than 170 basket supplied and fitted.  The aim of the scheme was to enhance the image of Arklow from the Wexford Road to Ferrybank.  Businesses on the outskirts got involved in the scheme by sponsoring baskets for unoccupied buildings and public areas of the town – these businesses include Arklow Bay Hotel, Arklow Marine Services, ASL, Leon Recycling and Rondo Foods Ltd.  As part of the scheme Arklow Municipal District (AMD) has also installed 10 tiered planters around the town which has been planted up by AMD staff.

The Town Team would like to acknowledge the support given by Cappagh Nurseries who supplied the baskets; the AMD staff who erected the baskets; Arklow Tidy Towns and Arklow Jetting & Drain Maintenance who are looking after the baskets throughout the summer.

Arklow Tidy Towns launched their new garden competition. All areas are automatically included and judged. Tidy Towns are asking everyone to nominate commendable front gardens they appreciate in Arklow.

Cathaoirleach for Arklow

Tommy-AnnelseyChamber Member, Cllr Tommy Annesley, has been elected as the new Cathaoirleach of Arklow Municipal District Council, taking over from outgoing Cathaoirleach Cllr Pat Kennedy

Clir. Annesley outlined what he would like to see happen in the town over the next year.

As Cathaoirleach he would like to finish projects that have been ongoing for a while, such as the rock armour on the South Beach and push for the groynes out into the sea to form a natural beach.  He intends pushing for funding from the Department.  An improvement for the business community is also on his agenda.  He hopes the valuation officer  to meet with the Chamber of Commerce and the public to explain how they reach a rateable valuation for properties.

The Arklow District Chamber of Commerce congratulate Councillor Annesley and wish him every success during his tenure.

The Arklow Pottery and Art Festival

 

gold coffe setThe Arklow Pottery and Art Festival, which is a two day event to celebrate the towns rich heritage, will take place on Saturday and Sunday, 24th and 25th of June. This two day event will include a number of live demonstrations and exhibitions of Arklow Pottery production process and includes the pottery designer John Ffrench.

The Festival will be officially Arklow-Pottery-Logoopened on Saturday at 11 am and the exhibition of Arklow Pottery will be open to the public at that time. From 11.30 am Thomas Dunne, Chantal Fortune and Peter Kinsella will be on hand to date and value pieces of Arklow Pottery.  On Sunday from 11 am to 2pm there will be ceramic workshops and an open sale from 11 am to 4.30 pm.

Funding for Arklow Harbour

 

Under the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund (EMF) Operational Program Wicklow County Council have been successful in obtaining funding for three projects. The funding will support storage facilities for fishermen at Arklow Harbour; fisherman hoist upgrade and associated training and restoration of the lightship “ SKUA” lantern. A total investment of €253,750 will be provided for these projects including €76,125 from Wicklow County Council. The remaining €177,625 co-funded by the EU and the Exchequer.

 Arklow Library is hosting an Exhibition 

 

hook lighthouseWe are hosting an exhibition of photography entitled Hook Peninsula Photography. This exhibition is a collection of ages by various photographers who were chosen from all the entries who entered the 2016 Hook Peninsula Photography Exhibition. From the entrants, images have been selected from the exhibition by an independent judge, with four category winners and one overall winner.

These stunning photographs show the Hook Peninsula as the jewel in the crown of the south East of Ireland.

Come and judge for yourself.  Exhibition till the end of the month.

Avonmore Musical Society Scholarships

 

Avonmore Musical Society were delighted to present scholarships to two young members of the society who took part in their recent production of “Oliver!”. The scholarships are to the AIMS (Association of Irish Musical Societies) Youth Summer School in Thurles County Tipperary in the first week of July. The worthy recipients this year are Luke Andrew Feeney and Sinead Byrne. The scholarship is issued in memory of Pat Hayes, a member of the Arklow society who sadly passed away 11 years ago due to illness. Pat loved the Avonmore and was a treasured and very much loved member who appeared in many shows and was a committee member. The awards were presented on the night by Sean Hayes, brother of Pat with Chairman Rob Donnelly and AIMS President Colm Moules also present.

The two recipients were very popular winners and the week long residential course in Thurles is designed to encourage, promote and advance further development in musical and theatre performance. The course is run by the Association of Irish Musical Societies with Director Peter Kennedy and Musical Director Mary Rose McNally. As well as the two scholarship winners Avonmore have another 10 members attending. Former past participants of the AIMS Summer School are Amy and Leah Penston who just finished a West End Tour of Roddy Doyle’s “The Commitments” and Jonny Holden who is currently appearing in the BBC programme “Paula”.

About 20 members of Avonmore will attend the AIMS Awards in Killarney next week when they will be cheering on Siobhan Fawsitt who was nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her portrayal of Widow Corney in the recent production of “Oliver!” The AIMS Awards will be attended by over 1100 people at what is called the Irish equivalent of the Oscars. The awards will be presented by the President of AIMS Colm Moules who is also a member of Avonmore Musical Society.

This is an active club with tennis being played on the all-weather courts throughout the year.

New members are very welcome as we have a lot to offer with junior camps and coaching organised.

There are one night tournaments as well as team competitions.

Anniversary Fun Day

Arklow Geraldine Ballymoney to celebrate the first year anniversary of its fabulous new Clubhouse at Shelton, Beech Road. Hosting a barbecue and family fun day on Sunday June 4th. East Coast Radio will broadcast from the club on the day and there will be interviews with some supporting stars.

Co Wicklow Street Feast

Street Feast on Sunday the 11th of June ,  Arklow is one of the 53 areas in Wicklow registered so far has got involved in street feasts.

This is a fantastic event to encourage young and old to take part, and invites individuals to host lunches on their streets or in their local park or gardens.

Last week Street Feast was awarded the County Wicklow Community Pride award for 2017.

Everyone is encouraged to bring something whether it is to share food, somewhere to sit, music and entertainment etc.

Street Feast are calling on people to come together at 12 noon on Sunday to enjoy good company , a bite to eat and some fun.
